Angry Cooper Rants: Why are concerts so damn expensive?

Although it might not appear it at this time, it is the end of May. You know what this means...

Paging Jay Belsito

...well, yes, that.

...and well yes, this too. (horray)

And because my filter is on today while I'm at work, yes, ladies outfits become smaller.

But I'm past the point here.
I'm going to assume at this point that you've read the title. So yeah.
Jump jump jump for the rest of the post

The weekend before Easter was supposed to be the best weekend ever for the start of concert season. Thursday night was Above and Beyond, Friday night was Basshunter, and Saturday night was Symphony X/ Powerglove. Yes, I am aware that precisely 4 of you who read this entry know who these bands are. Lets just put it this way.

Think about that for a second. Not Sheen. Three concerts in three nights, with potentially three different people (JR/Zombie Jesus/ Steve) in three different types of music (trance/dubstep/metal). Musical pants tent.

Only one problem. While A&B was resonably cheap ($20/ticket) and Symphony X was ok because it was at the palladium ($27), Basshunter was $65. SIXTY FIVE DOLLARS FOR GENERAL ADMISSION TICKETS.

Oh, and another thing. Screw you, every online ticket vendor. Nobody ever goes to the box office. Not only is it never open at the venue, but they never have any tickets. Want to know why? YOU BOUGHT ALL OF THEM. This does not....
AND I REPEAT DOES NOT

ALLOW YOU TO ADD 20% to the price of the ticket for "convenience fees" or whatever you want to call them. Screw you. You charge me on top of the ticket price so I can either pick them up at will call OR print them out. I have no choice. Really.

The other point we're missing is that nobody every buys just ONE ticket. We're all young and pretty. Everyone usually has a date or something to go with. So now the cost is doubled. Mark, I love you, but $130 to see basshunter is just madness.

And before somebody gets all uppity, yes, I'm aware that a good majority of that money goes to the artist and is the best way to support them. Oh by the way, have you read the companion article to this one? Look I linked it. Just keep it in another tab until you're done here. I promise this will all be over soon

I'm just saying. I love bands and I want to support you. But I'm still young and handsome (hellooooo ladies). I don't have the fat wad of cash to drop on hot tickets. I haven't even GOTTEN to talking about the good seats. I mean, steve basically morgaged the house to get Rush tickets a few years ago. Now granted, that was almost an religious experience for me, but does it REALLY have to be this expensive to go to a show? Can't you just play in a bigger venue and charge less? You make just as much and I'm willing to bet you'll get a few more fans out of it.

You don't have to have a tatoo of the band logo to go to a show. A good portion of the shows I see I'm just there as a casual fan. Hell, I wouldn't like half the bands I do if I hadn't been turned on to them casually or hadn't gone to a concert on a whim.
no joke here, slayer fans are (criminally) insane

You've got 30 tour dates all summer and I know you as a band hate each other by the end but can you put off buying the 1970 fender for JUST a bit longer? Maybe have cheaper merch? I don't want to have to decide if I'm going drinking for a weekend or to a 3 hour concert... and then pay for drinks.

I'm not saying for everyone to stop going to shows. I think thats the best part of most bands. But honestly, it's rare enough that bands I adore make it around this area when I can actually go. Hows about making it reasonably priced entertainment?
